OpenEmbedded
OpenEmbedded, or OE, is a build environment used to simplify the process of creating and maintaining Linux distributions. Used primarily for embedded or small microprocessor hardware platforms it use used to maintain several popular "small" Linux distributions such as Angstrom, OpenMoko?, and Poky.
OpenEmbedded chief strengths are it's relative easy of configuration, ease of porting to a new hardware platforms, and its extensive collection of thousands of package recipes for many popular packages for Linux.
!OpenAOS uses OpenEmbedded, and changes to OpenEmbedded by the SDE (originally provided by Archos), to maintain its own packages as an overlay to OpenEmbedded. This allows !OpenAOS to separate and maintain its own work, apart from OpenEmbedded with a minimum of conflict.
