Mount data partition with option to ignore owner/permissions

Reported by: dm8tbr Owned by: bubu
Priority: major Milestone: Android 2.3 Bull
Component: Android 2.3 Version: Android 2.2 - alpha3
Keywords: kernel, patch, mount, option, ext3, override Cc: bubu, furies

Description

I think Archos wrote a patch to do this and are using it in their Android. This helps them as Android assumes a FAT system behaviour and fails e.g. on such things like 'download' not being writeable by the market process.

If we'd mount the ext3 data partition that way we'd get rid of all those problems too and I think there is no real 'security' concern there is it? (this would not affect ownership/permissions of the rootfs)

To me this is the highest priority issue; especially for HDD units; all data created by Android gets only root permission; makes every single app relying on SD data to crash after it creates its folder.

I got a pretty filled to the rim 500gb unit; so I'm not really willing to give it a shot in the dark without someone else' advice, but

Wouldnt formatting to FAT solve this? I mean... there's no permissions system, isnt?
Of course, it's a bit.. radical, but hey.. if its all it takes to get a mostly-fully working FroYo?...
